HISTORY OF FALYRA.
Falyra is a world of stories and tales that are familiar to most; it houses creatures of all kinds, ranging from dwarves to the elven folk, from humans to goblins and imps, ogres and trolls and even fae. Most important of all of those things in the lore of the Falyrian is the dragons; those that rise up from their mountain home and fight for the cause they choose - and those that can, if they so choose, bond themselves to a Rider.

These Riders are traditionally mages, great warlocks powerful mages that travel to the mountains of the Dragon home, known in the Dragon tongue as the Falyai Dracyn, working through a series of trials to prove themselves worthy of being Bonded with a Dragon and share their spirit. To be Bonded to a Dragon is no simple thing:  it requires strength, wit, a good heart and mercy - and the understanding that life will be fleeting once bonded to a Dragon, and all those you love will die as you live. Those that pass through all four trials will be chosen by a Dragon and have their spirit Bonded forever.

For centuries, the Dragon Riders were regarded as some of the greatest and most celebrated of legends, truly powerful and good people that had proved themselves to all of the world by undertaking the tasks laid out before them. They were celebrated, hailed as lords and ladies, and their Dragons were worshipped as near Gods; some cities where the Riders were born chose to make shrines to the Dragons and beg for their kindness and luck from their hands when they stopped by throughout the ages.

It did not take long, however, for jealousy and fear to overtake the land. As the Riders truly proved themselves to be as immortal as their Bonded kin people stopped seeing them as great and kind beings and saw them instead as tyrants; stories passed down through families cursed them for performing ill acts and histories wrote that Dragons did no more than seek death and suffering for the world. People rose up and, in fear, the Dragons turned back to their mountains. In retaliation, the people of the world - not just the humans, but other races, from the tallest of the tree-folk to the smallest fae - found the Dragon Riders and cast them down, slaughtered them to kill their Bonded. When a Rider dies their Dragon does too; there is no means of saving them.

Thus, Dragon Riders fell into legend, but some did not forget. Those that travelled to the high mountains and proved themselves still found some to Bond with, and the world and it's Dragons survived... Until the Scale Wars.

THE SCALE WARS.
The few remaining Dragon Riders kept close to the Dragon home, their Bonded at their side to keep death from taking them. It was their duty to keep the line alive, to work towards rebuilding the reputation of those that were so Bonded to them. History left them as the stories of myth and legend, tied up with the tales that parents told their children at night; be good and do as you are asked or the Riders will come to steal you, to feed you to their evil Dragons deep in the mountainside.

There came a union of the people, known as the Defiant, that demanded to see proof of the extinction of the Dragons and their Riders. They feared the return of the Dragonkin, to see them rise up and claim the place of power they once had - and they feared the stories that were written in their histories, telling tales of Godlike beings that commanded people and tortured them for their crimes.

Together, the people sent scouts, mages and warriors to the Dragon Home, raising their banners and their swords to call out the last remaining Riders with spells and war tools at their hands. Those that were awake and not in a deep hibernation came out - and, soon enough, were betrayed. There were some among the Riders that were tired of their long existence, tired of being Bonded to a creature that had forced them into eternal solitude, and in the dark of night they slipped from their Home and handed themselves over to the People; the People who then slaughtered them, leaving the Dragons dead upon their mountains.

Content, the People searched the mountain and saw nothing but dead Dragons. Proud of their work, they harvested the Scales and took them back to their homelands, one for each of the races that joined with their cause, ranging from golds to emeralds to the deep blues of the ocean. Only one Dragon and her Rider remained, lost in a deep sleep kept under wards that not even the mages could break; Silvana and Eytel.

DRAGON RIDER MYTHOLOGY.
A true Dragon Rider is someone that has travelled to the mountain home of the Dragons, the Falyai Dracyn, and taken the four trials that lead to the heart of the mountainside. Reaching the mountain is no easy feat; it can take years to find enough information to discover the location and, upon finding it, scaling the mountain itself can be treacherous. It is for this reason that most Dragon Riders are skilled mages, well trained and powerful, though there have been a few number of warrior folk that have managed the journey and gone on to prove themselves as fit to be a Rider.

The four Trials that a Rider must face will dictate whether or not they are suitable, both physically, mentally and in their heart. They are as follows:
  • STRENGTH: The person must prove themselves to be strong in battle, not just physically but mentally. This can range from facing a phantom version of themselves, one they have to trick to overpower, fighting a previous figure that had attempted the trials or reliving a previous battle, depending upon the mind of the person themselves.
  • WIT: It must then be proven that the person is intelligent enough to understand what it means to be a Rider, that they realise that they must have the strength of mind to go through the process and to live with the burden. Most end up in a room where the answer to the door is hidden in stories of Dragon mythology, but some are faced with ghoulish figures that demand answers to riddles, all of which are based upon the history of Riders.
  • HEART: To be a Dragon Rider one must understand that they will be near immortal, living through the ages, forced to leave those they love behind. This trial is a test of that understanding; visions of families, husbands and wives play out, as do visions of the future. It is down to the person to decide which future they will take and what will be true, the deaths of those they love and the understanding that their choice means they will likely live longer than any they care for. It is by understanding the depth of their choice that a Rider is allowed through - those that refuse to accept such a thing will be denied.
  • CHOICE: When one is Bonded to a Dragon they are given great power, and with that power comes the responsibility to use it wisely. Those that would take the power of being Bonded to a Dragon and abuse it, using it to harm others and misuse their connections would not be allowed through to finally join their spirits. In this trial, some are asked to kill a small child as proof of their strength; others are set before a family member, stating that they must choose between home and their power - and each are told the final task is one of blood, rather than choice; they blood must be shed in order for the Bond to begin. Only those that show mercy and a true understanding of what having such a power means are granted the Bond.
When all four trials are passed, the visitor is granted a Bonding of their spirit to a Dragon - and the Dragon chooses them, not the other way around. When one is Bonded to a Dragon, there are certain powers granted to them; greater strength, an immortal life, a telepathic link with their Bonded that extends to sharing sight and mind, faster healing and immunity to poisons. There are, however, setbacks; if the Rider is wounded then, too, shall the Dragon be, and vice versa. Immortality comes with a cost, and should the Dragon die then the Rider cannot live on - in most cases, due to their Bond, a Dragon and their Rider die at the same time.

Dragons in Falyra are traditionally twice the size of a shire horse, magnificent creatures with scales of all colours. Each has a magic of their own, generally linked to their colours - fire, ice, poison, lightning, etc - and are keen to bond with a Rider for the benefit of a shared mind and, because, when linked they are granted the same boost in power. It is being Bonded that gives immortality as well, until death takes one or the other. Each Dragon has a name and they cannot speak expect through their Rider; their own language is Dragon Tongue, and understanding of it is given to a Rider upon their Bond.
